Becoming both a licensed general contractor and interior designer in South Florida wasn’t a career change—it was a return to my roots

I grew up in a family immersed in the design-build industry. My grandparents owned a successful design-build company in Boca Raton during the 1970s, and my father worked alongside them as a contractor specializing in custom carpentry. While many children spent their weekends in playrooms, I spent mine on construction sites, watching homes transform from blueprints into finished spaces. Those early experiences shaped my passion for both construction and interior design.

After earning my degree in Interior Design, I spent nearly a decade designing residential spaces throughout South Florida. I loved creating beautiful interiors, but I continually encountered the same challenge—the disconnect between the designer’s vision and the construction team’s execution.

Too often I heard the same responses:

• “That can’t be built.”
• “It won’t look like the rendering.”
• “It’s too expensive.”
• “The timeline won’t allow it.”

Projects became delayed, communication broke down, and avoidable issues surfaced because the design and construction teams weren’t working together from the beginning. Planning felt reactive instead of proactive, leaving homeowners frustrated and projects unnecessarily complicated.

I knew there had to be a better way.

Rather than accepting the limitations of the traditional process, I decided to bridge the gap myself.

I dedicated more than a year to studying for the four Florida General Contractor licensing exams—each lasting six hours. There were countless late nights, plenty of determination, and yes, a few failed attempts along the way. The journey wasn’t easy, but it was worth every challenge.

Today, I’m proud to be both a Florida Licensed General Contractor and a professional Interior Designer.

That decision completely transformed how I deliver projects.

As both the designer and builder, I can make decisions with construction in mind from day one. My clients benefit from streamlined communication, realistic budgeting, proactive scheduling, and fewer surprises throughout the renovation or custom home process. Instead of managing multiple companies with competing priorities, they work with one experienced team from concept through completion.

For me, the most rewarding part of being a design-build professional is solving complex challenges. I enjoy designing bold, highly customized spaces and then developing the construction strategy needed to bring those ideas to life. Understanding every phase of the building process has made me a stronger designer, a better contractor, and a more effective advocate for my clients.

While construction isn’t always glamorous, it’s incredibly rewarding to see a vision become reality through thoughtful planning and expert execution.
